Pictures of the destruction at the Amuay Refinery (Paraguana Refinery Complex) taken by Hector Silva (Source: Noticias 24.).
This morning an explosion at the refinery in Falcon State, Venezuela, (the world’s second largest) left 26 people dead (official numbers as of this moment), many more wounded, and unmeasurable damage to the surrounding population from the shockwave, as well as a black plume of smoke that soars up to the sky in a black column. The tragedy is still too recent and investigations are ongoing so as to establish responsibility.
The news are not covering the grave shortage of hospitals in the vicinity of the affected area that are capable of handling the number of people suffering from burns. It also event stirred controversy as the Venezuelan Oil Company (PDVSA) has been under control of the ruling political party (the PSUV or United Socialist Party of Venezuela, loyal to Chavez) since 2003, and ever since then there has been a long list of accidents and reports of gross abandon of basic safety (here’s a document in Spanish with a list of accidents from 2003-2011).
